A Beginner Routine

An ordered morning and evening routine that introduces actives over weeks without irritation.

Start with sunscreen only. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the single most effective anti-ageing measure, because UV exposure drives most visible skin ageing. Apply about half a teaspoon for the face alone — the tested dose is 2 mg per square centimetre of skin — and keep it up for two weeks before adding anything else.

Week three onward, add retinol two or three nights per week in the evening. Retinol is best introduced two or three nights per week and increased gradually to limit irritation. Over-the-counter products contain 0.1% to 1% retinol; begin at the low end of that range.

If tolerance holds for several weeks, increase retinol toward nightly use. Retinoids increase skin cell turnover and support collagen production, which reduces fine lines over months of use — so this stage is where most of the visible change will eventually come from.

Add vitamin C in the morning once the evening routine is stable. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant used in serums at 10% to 20% concentration, applied under sunscreen.

Niacinamide can be added at any point: 2% to 5% is well tolerated and pairs safely with most other active ingredients, so it slots into either the morning or the evening without conflict.

Typical refusals to watch for: stinging in the first retinol week (usually means too many nights too soon), flaking around the nose (often under-moisturising or over-exfoliating), and abandoning the routine at week three just before collagen effects would begin to show.

  • Weeks 1–2: broad-spectrum sunscreen only, daily, about half a teaspoon for the face
  • Weeks 3+: retinol two or three nights per week, 0.1% to start
  • Weeks 6+: increase retinol frequency gradually if no irritation
  • Once stable: add vitamin C 10% to 20% in the morning under sunscreen
  • Any time: niacinamide 2% to 5% as a tolerance buffer
